Rita Levi-Montalcini Lecture 2022

The Lecture was held on June 10 by Nobel Laureate David Julius (University of California), whose studies, and the discovery and characterization of TRPV receptors underlying touch and the mechanisms regulating the perception of cold, heat, and pain, paved the way for the development of new treatments for chronic pain, inflammation, and pain hypersensitivity. The Lecture, entitled “Gut Feelings: Probing Mechanisms of Visceral Pain,” was followed by the International Workshop “From Touch to Pain,” during which leading scientists from the United States, China, and Europe explored the mechanisms through which thermal, mechanical, tactile, and painful stimuli are converted into electrical signals, the consequences of certain molecular alterations involved in these processes, and future perspectives in the field of analgesic therapy.

Since 2013, EBRI has celebrated each year the memory of its founder, Nobel Laureate Rita Levi-Montalcini, through the Rita Levi-Montalcini Lecture. The Lecture aims to commemorate the life and thought of a woman who made a significant contribution to the development of Neuroscience. Distinguished scientists and numerous Nobel Prize winners have contributed to this event. The Rita Levi-Montalcini Lectures open an international workshop in the specific field addressed by the Lecture, attended by renowned scientists. The Lectures have always been highly successful, with the participation of young researchers coming not only from Rome but also from many other parts of Italy.
