1973 Research Director at the Laboratory of Cell Biology, CNR, EMBO Fellowship at the Dept. of Neurobiology of the Weizmann Institute, Israel

1977-78 Visiting Professor at the Dept. of Neuropathology, Children´s Hospital Medical Center, Harvard Medical School.

1978 Member of European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO)

1986 - present Full Professor in Neurophysiology, II University of Rome

Experimental work and participation to international meetings as invited speaker. Calissano has published 135 scientific papers in international scientific journals, has attended 65 international meetings as an invited speaker and communicated his scientific experimental work at numerous seminars in different Italian and foreign universities.

Scientific divulgation

Calissano has published 30 articles of divulgation in different italian newspapers and written two books entitled:

- Neuroni, mente ed evoluzione, Garzanti Editor (neurons, mind and evolution)
- Mente e cervello, Il Melangolo Editor (the mind/brain problem)

He has acted as scientific director and expert in biomedicine for 5 distinct Encyclopedias edited by the Treccani Institute:

- Frontiers of Life - Encyclopedia of Science and Technology
- Piccola Treccani Encyclopedia
- Sixth volume of the Grande Encyclopedia
- The encycopedia of the third millenium
